EDIN Workshop 21st November 2019

Learning Analytics: What does it mean for academic developers?

Thursday 21st November 2019
Bea Orpen Building, Dublin City University (DCU)
10:30am-1pm

All of us working in higher education have heard frequently about learning analytics in recent years.

But what does this new area of practice and research mean for academic developers? What do we need to know in order to help our academic colleagues and enhance student learning? How do we make sense of the new data coming our way?

At this workshop, Dr Pauline Rooney and Dr Geraldine Gray of TU Dublin will guide us through recent developments in learning analytics and how we can draw usefully on this work in educational development. In particular, the current DALTAI Project (funded by the National Forum) has provided exciting new insights into how and why we can use learning analytics.

Pauline and Geraldine will share this work with us during the morning, and our aim is to enable all participants to leave with some new knowledge and awareness of how academic practice can be enhanced through appropriate engagement with analytics.

EDIN Workshop 22nd March 2019

Evidencing impact of academic development

Friday 22nd March, 2019
TU Dublin – City Campus – Aungier Street

Academic developers in Ireland and internationally are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate the impact of their work on their institutions, on academic practice, and most importantly, on students’ learning. Following on from the first workshop in this series, in which participants discussed the issue and shared ideas of what constitutes impact, this second workshop focuses on how to evidence impact effectively. EDIN invites academic developers to work together to create a resource to support/guide academic developers in the creation, demonstration and reporting of the impact of their academic development work. By the end of this workshop it is hoped that a resource to define the process and give credibility to approaches to evidencing impact will be mapped out and planned.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Marita Grimwood, SFHEA FSEDA, Learning and Teaching Consultant, UK.

In advance of the workshop, participants are asked to complete this brief three-question survey:

To get the most from this initiative, participants need to be present for the duration of the full session. Please bring your laptop, tablet or preferred media to write with on the day. This will be a practical session, involving activities, discussion and planning to produce individual outcomes for participants as well as strategies for EDIN to support its members in demonstrating the impact of their work.

EDIN Workshop 18th January 2019

Academic Development – Creating and Demonstrating Impact

This is the first of two linked workshops organised by EDIN in spring 2019:

  • Workshop 1 – 18th January 2019, National College of Ireland (Executive 1)
  • Workshop 2 – 22nd March 2019, Venue TBA

11.00-14.00 (with EDIN Committee meetings to follow on both dates from 14.00 to 15.00)

Academic developers in Ireland and internationally are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate the impact of their work on their institutions, on academic practice, and most importantly, on students’ learning.

In this two-part workshop, we invite colleagues (i) to discuss and define impact in the context of our work as academic developers, and (ii) to identify how we can respond to the demand to demonstrate the impact of our activities in the Irish HE context.

We will consider appropriate evaluation and metrics to measure the impact of academic development and then the channels we can use for dissemination of work in order to raise its impact. This will include focusing on publication strategies for academic developers.

  • Workshop 1 will constitute a facilitated session where EDIN members will discuss the issue, share ideas of what constitutes impact and how they demonstrate this impact. An experienced facilitator, Dr Marion Palmer, will lead this discussion.
  • The outcomes of Workshop 1 will inform the content/focus of Workshop 2, which will also address issues of demonstrating impact through publications and other alternative metrics (Altmetrics). An invited guest will facilitate this second workshop and share good practice from their context/institution.

To get the most from this initiative, participants need to be present for the duration of the full workshops. Please bring your laptop, tablet or preferred media to write with on the day. These will be practical workshops, involving activities, discussion and planning to produce individual outcomes for participants as well as strategies for EDIN to support its members in demonstrating the impact of their work.

Workshop: Designing Assessments for Academic Integrity

DCU are working as one of four university partners on an Erasmus+ INTEGRITY project. DCU TEU is responsible for developing a resource toolkit for academics. This includes development of a suite of resources and case studies to support faculty in designing assessments which actively encourage academic integrity. It is designed to be used either by individual academics for their self-directed learning, or by a programme chair/academic developer to lead workshops with a programme team.

At the end of this one hour workshop participants will be able to:

  • Explore the principles of academic integrity;
  • Apply them to their own practice through using some of the resources;
  • Provide feedback on the resources; and
  • Consider ways of using these resources to further enhance academic integrity.
